This is an explanation of how WP works: How to earn House Points, how the RPs work, how to earn money, etc. If you have any questions and they aren't listed on here, you can ask in Saint Mungo's.

The entire How WP Works manual has been rewritten, and new rules have been made, please read through the new manual and sign the new rules in the Rules board of my office.

ACCOUNTS

Do not lie about your age or gender. We take age dishonesty very seriously and will ban members who are under the age of 13. Some areas of Wizard Portus, such as the dormitories, are restricted by gender. You are free to put no gender in your profile, but do not lie about your gender, as it’s deceitful and unfair to the other members.
Double accounts are strictly forbidden. Each user may have ONE account and ONE only. If you have a sibling or another family member who uses the same computer you do, then tell me or I will end up banning one of your accounts.
Please, no inappropriate usernames. Keep your names child friendly. If your name is completely inappropriate, you will get banned.
NEW! Your display name cannot be a Harry potter character's name due to our new roleplay system. You can apply to become a Harry potter character here. If you change your display name to a HP character name and have not applied for that character, a mod will change your display name back to your username.

USER CONDUCT

Do not complain about where you are sorted or what wand you get. I sort you where I think you should be, and your house WILL NOT change. If you make a big stink about where you're sorted or what wand you get, then perhaps that one word that rhymes with can, pan, chan, or ban can help you out.
Unity is big here. There will be no fighting with or being mean to people due to their House, family (pureblood/muggleborn/etc), race, gender, age, sexuality, or anything else. If you're caught mistreating someone like that, the smallest punishment will be a suspension.
Any extreme obscenities such as intensively foul language, inappropriate links or pictures, and severe bashing of fellow users in the forums is prohibited and if occurs 2+ times, will result in a suspension or ban from WP.
Don't double-post, which means posting twice in a row. Oftentimes the second+ post/s will be deleted.
Don't spam. This means do not repeatedly copy long messages over and over again, harass anyone, post one-word posts where they are not allowed, posts with no real meaning or purpose, or post constant and belligerent messages of a malicious nature. If you do so you will be given a detention, temporarily banned, or beaten into space with an abnormally large mallet.
Impersonation of any HP cast, crew, J.K. Rowling, or any WP members, is immediately punishable by a ban. We will not tolerate impersonation, especially if the impersonation is of one of Wizard Portus’ members. This includes in the chat room and chat box. I check IPs, so I will know if you’re not who you say you are. Don’t try it.
MODIFIED!Proboards is a 13+ age forum restriction, which means that you are allowed to be PG-13 in your posts, but no higher. Everyone should have a good judgment of what PG-13 is, but if staff deems your posting R-rated or above, you will be reprimanded. Minor language is allowed, but do not be foul or use constant explicit language. There is to be absolutely no posting regarding drugs and no mention of excessive alcohol usage or gambling. Sexual posts are strictly prohibited. Tame and tasteful innuendo is fine if it's in jest, but anything past that will be taken very seriously and result in detention.
We here at Wizard Portus are not responsible for any minors under the age of 13 joining this site. The age restriction in joining is clear and we will not be held accountable for any manipulation of that restriction.
Do not cheat on games, contests, quests, roleplays, or classwork.
There are a great deal of people who will and do come to WP, so please be safe and do not give out personal information such as phone numbers, full name, and exact locations. We want WP to be a safe as possible, so we will suspend users who ask for such information in the forums. Owls are excluded from this rule, but this does not mean we won't make sure people are being safe.
Do not ask mods if you can be staff. That’s the easiest way to NEVER get hired. You can apply for staff positions in the Ministry of Magic and quite often we will come to you and offer a job if we think you deserve it.
Advertising your site is ok if you do it in your sig or in the affiliate board, but don't go around spamming it or advertising child-unfriendly sites, please. Do not advertise you site in the chats or in any boards not specifically deemed for that purpose.
The staff is here to help you but if they are abusing their power, that's not a good thing. Remember, when you report anyone to me or Mo, you will remain anonymous, so please tell us if a staff member or any member is doing something wrong.
I understand that it's never fun when people break the rules, but the Moderators will take care of most things. Only report excessively bad situations that you feel have not been dealt with, as we already have exploding inboxes. Minor mini-modding (reprimanding members for breaking rules when you are not a mod) is ok, but please don’t go around modding everything when it is not your job. That is what our staff is here for.

MISCELLANEOUS

The signature size limit is 300 (height) by 500 (width) in pixels.
Grammar is very important here. Please take the time to respect the other members by using correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. L33t talk and netspeak is ok when you’re playing games and messing around, but in the RPs it will be reprimanded. You will be PMed by a mod and asked to improve your writing if you consistently post with bad grammar.
Theft, plagiarism, and/or use of any of WP’s content without permission is strictly prohibited and punishable by law.
We are not a casting agency and have no direct contact with any of the Harry Potter cast, directors, producers, J.K. Rowling, or Warnerbros. Therefore, we cannot get you casted or meetings with any of the above. However, we can supply you with links to those who can.
Since this is a Harry Potter fansite, we encourage the members and visitors to come because they enjoy the series and not to bash it or insult those who enjoy it; so please be respectful of the fact that we like Harry Potter. If you dislike Harry Potter, perhaps you should reconsider being here.
If you feel that we have missed anything in the Terms and Conditions or any policies, please let us know at St. Mungo's. If you have a question, ask it in Saint Mungo's and it will be answered promptly. Questions asked in this thread will most likely not be answered. I hope that you enjoy your time at WP and come back for years to come.

Your Houses, House Points, and the House Cup

Wizard Portus is an RP in which you must be sorted into one of our six Houses. Those Houses are Beauxbatons, Gryffindor, Durmstrang, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. When you are sorted you will officially be a member of Beauxdurwarts, our school, and you will be given access to your House common room and Fingledorf, which is the House of all houses, so to speak.

Fingledorf is a house invented by a few members and it is where you can go to hang out with everyone. It's kind of like a Great Hall.

Once sorted into a House, you can join the Quidditch team, participate in contests, and a lot more.

There will be dates set for a House to win the House Cup. The House Cup is a prize that the House with the most House Points will win.

Whichever house wins the House Cup will get their own party and everyone in the house will receive a reward point and a karma.

[NEW!] The house cup is judged after every term. A term lasts four months, meaning that there are 3 terms in a year.

To earn House Points:

-You can win HPs in contests and games
-If you do good deeds, Heads of Houses, Professors, and Mods can award you HPs.
-You also earn HPs for referring people to the site.
-Certain quests and RPs will win you HP
-Likewise, you can lose HP if you are misbehaving.

Have some school spirit and win it for your House!
House points are counted at the end of every week.

Then there are Head Girls/Boys. They are almost as powerful as HOH, but not quite. If your HOH is not around, you can always go to these guys.

Ranks and Powers

A person's rank on WP is important. It show both what they are capable of doing and allowed to do. Here are the ranks in descending order:

Headmistress/Deputy Headmistress: Administrator Status and name color
Ministress of Magic: Administrator Status and name color
Head of House: Top Staff Status and name color
House Ambassador: Top Staff Status and name color
Head Girl/Boy: Official Staff Status and name color
Professor: Official Staff Status
Professor in Training: Moderator Status
Moderator: Moderator Status
Prefect: Moderator Status
Student: Student Status
Squib (New Member): No Status-1 Gold Star

Now you might find yourself asking, what in the world does this all mean? What are these positions anyway?
Let me explain what each level is:

Headmistress- That's me. I am the founder and owner of this site and am therefore the most powerful. I can do anything I want, including giving all the below their powers.

Deputy Headmistress - Is equally powerful to the Headmistress, and is the second in command. In the case that I am missing or away, she would be in charge of WP, making the decisions and keeping everything organized.

Ministress of Magic- This is like a second Deputy Headmistress. She helps me and the Deputy Headmistress with many administrative duties and works along side us.

Head of House- These are just as powerful as me. They run their Houses and, with my permission, also can moderate any board, roleplay, or whatever. Obey them.

House Ambassadors- Like Head Boys and Girls, these staff members have a few less powers than Head of Houses. However, they are still in charge of a House and deserve just as much respect as a Head of House. House Ambassadors, in short, are people from other houses who take over a house with no leader. So, if, say, Gryffindor had no Head of House, someone from another House besides Gryffindor could take over and lead the House until a Head of House was found.

Head Girls/Boys- These are just a little less priveleged than HoH. They are the extra hand of their HoH and can sometimes act as a replacement for them if need be.

Professors- These people teach classes and keep order. They are smart, reliable, and can lay down the law, especially in their class. Treat them, as you should with everyone on this site, with respect.

Professors in Training- These are people who have Prefect powers, but teach a class. They teach one lesson of their class and then it is decided whether or not they should become a Professor. It's like a training period.

Moderator- An upgraded Prefect, essentially. They can edit profiles, moderate forums, and do much more to help keep the order and organization of WP flowing wonderfully.

Prefect- These guys are responsible members who are there to help who they can. They have certain administrative privileges to help somewhat and are there to make WP easier for you to use.

Student- They are members who have been sorted into a House.

Years

You also have ranks on WP. In other words, we have incorporated the Hogwarts school system of 1st-7th year and Graduate. According to your post count, you will go up in years. Most sites have many more requirements than this, but the way we see it is that if you have enough posts to reach another year, you've probably met all the requirements.
Also, once you graduate from school, you continue to gain rank. So, even though you've completed school, you will continue to up your status here at Wizard Portus. The past graduation ranks will come with perks, such as special boards, certain staff abilities (but you won't be staff), and prizes.

Here are the ranks:

Squib # of Stars: 1 # of Posts: 0	1st Year Stars: 1 Posts: 50	2nd Year Stars: 2 Posts: 500	3rd Year Stars: 3 Posts: 1500	4th Year Stars: 4 Posts: 2250	5th Year Stars: 5 Posts: 3500
6th Year Stars: 6 Posts: 5000	7th Year Stars: 7 Posts: 6500	Graduate Stars: 8 Posts: 8000

As a temporary treat to more active members, new rankings with red stars and prizes have been created. if you achieve one of these rankings, ow Headmaster Snape and he will give you your reward.

Skilled Sorcerer, 4 stars, 10000 posts
--AWARD: 75 House Points, 2 Karma, 1 Reward Point
Expert Enchanter, 5 stars, 12500 posts
--AWARD: 100 House Points, 3 Karma, 2 Reward Points
Master Magician, 6 stars, 16250 posts
--AWARD: 125 House Points, 3 Reward Points
Wizarding Legend, 7 stars, 21000 posts
--AWARD: 150 House Points, 5 Reward Points

RPG Stats

Levels

The first stat that you will find in your RPG stats is your level. You start off at level zero, and you probably want to know how you gain levels, don't you?

Well, it's actually never the same for any single member. The first and most easy way to gain a level is posting. But, you ask, how many posts will equal one level? Once again, it changes for every member. I've designed that particular stat to only change every approximate number, so the number will never be the same. It just depends on how often you post and where you post.

The only guarantee I will give you is that you will reach level 3 by your 500th post. Otherwise, my lips are sealed.

The next thing you might be wondering is what exactly is the point of levels? We already have years, so why levels too?

Let me explain something: Levels and Years are very different. A year simply shows where you are in wizard schooling (aka: how long you've been at Wizard Portus). Years give you more priveleges as a veteran member, but Levels are for something else entirely.

Levels are a matter of how skilled a witch or wizard you are. It is your experience and magical intelligence. Most quests will require that you are a certain level. Many items, animal,and even clothing also require that you're a certain level before you can even use them. Levels determine if you are ready to handle certain challenges and allow you to take on things that lower levels cannot.

What are other ways to gain levels besides posting? Simple.

You can gain levels three different ways besides posting. For instance: if you complete a quest, you gain a level. Any quest completion will be an automatic level for you. You can also purchase certain items or win items that will level you. Sometimes, contests will also have a level as a prize.

HP and MP

Later on, there will be quests, items, and activities that require you to have a certain amount of Health Power (HP) or Magic Power (MP). Since we do not have that aspect right now, I won't bother cramming unnecessary information into your mind. However, I thought it wise to start you earning points in those categories anyway, so you'll have a substantial amount of HP and MP when those stats come into effect.

Money and Items

In an effort to make the monetary system of WP more realistic, we have molded the idea of wizard money to our system. We now have galleons, sickles, and knuts.

The symbol representation for Wizard Money is ~

And the worth of each coin is as follows:

Galleon = ~5
Sickle = ~2
Knut = ~1

So, for instance, if you wanted to purchase something that cost ~13, you would pay 2 galleons, 1 sickle, and 1 knut.

When you post, you gain 1 galleon, 2 sickles, and 3 knuts per post.

This is the currency you will use to purchase everything in Diagon Alley. In the future, you will be required to pay to enter certain boards and even to go on some quests, just like normal wizarding costs for traveling.

Reputation

Reputation is the same thing it has always been. For every duel you win, you get 1 reputation. Certain items and quests will require a number of reputation before you can use or take part in them.
You do not lose reputation if you lose a duel.

House Points

House points are earned by each individual member. The house points you have earned will be put into your profile. Every now and then, house points for every house will be counted and removed from your profile. At the end of a term, your house point stats will be set back to 0.

Reward Points

Reward points are a very special stat. You can use these points to go to the Rewards shop in Diagon Alley and choose from numerous prizes of great magnitude and usefulness. The possibilities for reward points are endless, so do your best to earn them.

You can get reward points from any of the following:

Contests, quests, discoveries, exceptionally good deeds, and referring members to the site.

When you refer a member to Wizard Portus, you get 100 house points and a reward point if they say in their sorting quiz that it was you who referred them.

Sometimes, if you do something absolutely wonderful for someone here or the site itself, you will be given a reward point from one of the top staff.

Otherwise, reward points are most often won as prizes.

The RPs of WP

The RolePlays of WP

One of the largest portions of WP is its roleplays. For all roleplays, you must have your wand.
The majority of the roleplays take place in Beauxdurwarts or off the grounds. You may read about the main roleplays that take place there below:

Duels
Duels can be found in the first floor of the Beauxdurwarts castle or in the Last Battle. Spells and tactics that are and aren't allowed will be found in that board, as will the rules of dueling.
Dueling is where we pair up two students in a battle of spells and wits. The winners of the duels will get 30 galleons, 1 Reputation point, and 30 House Points.

Classes

CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION - Classes will be up and running as soon as possible.

Classes can be found all around Beauxdurwarts. In classes, students participate in roleplays (lessons), take tests, do homework, and earn house points through all of this.
Classes apply real life concepts to magical ideas, making it a place where you can not only have fun, but learn as well.

Hogsmeade
Hogsmeade is a place for those full of ideas. If you have a RP idea, you can start it there. If it gets big enough or if it's good enough, it might even be made an official RPG of WP! All you have to do is post a thread and start your game or adventure as your fellow students join you.
All activity must be in RP form in Hogsmeade.

Quidditch

CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Each house has their own Quidditch team, and you must have a broom to be a part of it. Try-out for the team, and if you make it, you will be part of the best Wizarding sport in the world.
Quidditch is a game of trivia. The referee will challenge all players of the game to the extent of their knowledge on Harry Potter, so make sure you brush up on your HP knowledge!
Winning the game means winning 100 points for your house and 2 karma for each active team member, so try really hard!
After a few games, the Quidditch World Cup will be held, where the two teams with the most wins go up against each other for the prize of 200 House points and 5 karma per active teammate, and a place in the hall of fame.

Member Awards

Member awards are highly honorable awards given to the most deserving and active members of Wizard Portus.

We love to recognize our members for doing good things, and we think this is a great way to do it.

Therefore, we have a monthly recognition of our members.

Here are the awards and the prizes that come with them:

Member of the Month: This person is the most active and helpful member of the entire month. To win this, you must be kind, helpful, and active. These members truly deserve a pat on the back. If you win this, you get 3 karma, 200 house points, and 1 reward point.

Top Poster: This person is the member on the site with the highest post count. Every month, the top poster will get 1 karma, 100 house points, and 1 reward point.

Newb of the Month: This member has to have joined the month that the award is given. So for the December awards, the winner of this will have joined in December. This is given to the nicest, most active newb. The winner will receive 1 karma, 75 house points, and 1 reward point.

Best Roleplayer: The best roleplayer is the member who has been most active in RPs that month and is an intelligent, creative roleplayer. You must have great writing skills and portray your character well. The winner of this will get 50 house points and 1 reward point.

Best Professor: This award goes to the best Professor in Beauxdurwarts. It's determined by the consistency, uniqueness, and intelligence of the professor's classes. The winner of this will get 50 house points and 1 reward point.

Best Student: This award is for the best student. While Professor's teach the classes, the students move it forward. To win this award, you must be studious and active in classes. The winner gets 50 house points and 1 reward point.

THE ORDER OF MERLIN (Member of the Year): This is a very special award. At the end of every year, we will now choose the best Wizard Portus member of the entire year. This person has to have been with us for at least a few months, but other than that, there are no requirements. Unlike other awards, this one will take place by a vote. At the end of the year, I will post a poll with numerous members that you can vote for. The members will decide who wins this honorable spot.
The winner of member of the year will get 10 karma, 350 house points, and 10 reward points. They will also get a special icon in their custom title declaring them the best Wizard Portus member for that year.

House Spirit Awards

The House Spirit awards are a series of 6 different awards given to six different members at the end of each term. These awards are for the most spirited house members. This award is all about house pride, contribution, point earning, and everything to do with house spirit. Whoever contributed the most to their house will win this award.

The winners will each receive 3 karma and 2 reward points.

Is Wizard Portus an official Harry Potter site?
No. Wizard Portus is unofficial and is in no way affiliated with J.K. Rowling, Warnerbros, or any Harry potter cast.

How and where do I join?

Joining is very simple. All you need to do is click the "Join" or "Register" button above in the menu. It's completely free and takes about 2 minutes. Once you have registered, you need to take the sorting quiz before you can participate in most activities. There are links to the quizzes in the main welcome table.

Do I have to pay to be a member?

No. Wizard Portus is a free site to all members and so are the majority of its features. We will, however, be adding new features soon available only to those who pay, but right now, everything is completely free.

Why haven't you gotten to my Sorting/Wand quiz yet?

I do the best I can. DON'T owl us with questions like this. We have a lot of things to do on this site, and seeing as the Headmaster and Ministress of Magic are the only one who can do those two particular quizzes, we will get to it whenever we can. Patience, please.

Where is my inbox? I can't find the place to check my messages! And how do I send message to people?

You can locate your messages right under the menu buttons at the top of the site.

You can owl people by either replying to a owl they have sent you, or going to their profile and clicking the link that says 'Send Personal Message'.

What's Karma?

It's something that other members can add to your collection or take away from. Karma is all about respect and community. If someone thinks you're nice or they like something you do, they will add to your Karma, but if they think you don't deserve as much karma, (if you did something not so nice) they will take away from it.

What is a 'Reputation' (under House Points)?

This is how many duels you have won. It makes it so we don't pair amateurs with advanced people, and such. You don't want to be dueling someone who has won 10 duels if you've only won 3, or something of the like.

I have a complaint or a problem with something on the site. Where do I tell you?

Unless it's something where you want to remain anonymous (in which case you can owl the Headmaster), you can post such things in Saint Mungos.

Why haven't I gotten my stuff from Diagon Alley yet?

I do not handle Diagon Alley sales. The staff moderating that particular area right now is low in number, so please be patient while they get your stuff to you.

I'm a staff member and I am going to be gone for a bit because of life stuff. Is that ok?

Staff or no staff, this is for all of you. Life comes first. If something's going on in real life, don't feel bad or apologize to me. Just tell me, your professors, or whoever need be that you'll be gone for a bit. We completely understand.

Staff members must notify the Headmaster by owl if they are going to be gone

What is the school term for classes and can I still sign up for them?

A school term is the length of time until the House Cup is won, contests are over, classes take their term exams, etc. A class term is four months in length.
You can sign up for classes at any time. I doesn't matter if they have already started. When you sign up for a class, it is not required for you to attend the lesson already in session, but you are welcome to, nonetheless.

Do you take donations and what do you use donations for?

We will be taking donations some time next year (2009).

Who are the staff and can I become a staff member?

There are quite a few staff members on Wizard Portus, all of different levels and purpose. The top staff include the following:
Severus Snape (admin) - Head Administrator (Headmistress)
Sirius Black (coltongirl) - Co-Administrator- (Deputy Headmistress)
Hermione Granger (octgreenfrog) - Chief Moderator- (Ministress of Magic)
Albus Severus Potter - Top Moderator - (Gryffindor Ambassador to Beauxbatons)
Neville Longbottom (tiredraven) - Top Moderator - (Gryffindor Head of House)
Bill Weasley (jcarr3125) - Top Moderator - (Gryffindor Ambassador to Hufflepuff)
Luna Lovegood (freedomisntfree) - Top Moderator - (Slytherin Ambassador to Ravenclaw)
Scorpius Malfoy (sulea) - Top Moderator - (Slytherin Head of House)

As for those of you who wish to have a staff position, this is not a position you may ask us for. There is a place in the Atrium where you can turn in an application to be staff. Quite often, we will come to you for staff positions. You must be an active, good, and participatory member of our forums to be considered.

Can my site affiliate with Wizard Portus? Do you only allow Harry Potter sites to affiliate with you?

Yes, you can affiliate with us, but you must meet certain requirements before you can do so. These requirements are explained in our forums (http://wizardportus.co.nr) in the Wizengamot board, which is located in the Office.
Also, every type of site is accepted, as long as it is not pornographic, illegal, or obscene.
